Copr Lounge- Wales Millenium Centre

Perched in a crow’s nest position above the main public spaces, the Copr Lounge is a members-only area within the Wales Millennium Centre. I was responsible for the interior concept development, selection and layout of furniture, bespoke detailing, finishes, and all supporting visualisation and drawing packages.

Overlooking the dramatic double-height Ffwrnais space below, the Copr Lounge offers a contrasting experience—intimate, warm, and calm. Drawing inspiration from domestic living rooms rather than traditional members’ bars or lounges, we created a relaxed, flexible environment that shifts easily from day to night use.

The furniture layout is deliberately varied and residential in tone—comprising curated combinations of sofas, armchairs, side tables, and soft furnishings to encourage a mix of social and quiet use. Lighting is layered, with overheads supplemented by pendant and floor lamps to create a soft, ambient glow. Materials and finishes throughout are natural and tactile, with fabric choices referencing earth tones and textures found in the Welsh landscape.

A key feature is the timber-clad wall housing a discreet bar, designed as a warm visual anchor within the space. This is balanced by rich blue end walls, which provide a dramatic backdrop for a rotating collection of Welsh artworks. Upholstery is punctuated by handcrafted cushions designed by Welsh textile artist Llio James, adding both narrative and texture.

The Copr Lounge is now a distinctive and atmospheric retreat within the Centre—one that celebrates craft, comfort, and cultural connection.
